For the past few weeks (ever since I gave up coffee), I’ve been getting up early to make a green breakfast smoothie. Not that this smoothie takes a long time to prepare! It’s as simple as ramming some delectable ingredients into a blender. I’ve never been particularly wowed by smoothies, and I’m not one to feel particularly virtuous because I had a green smoothie for breakfast rather than, say, eggs and hash. But this particular breakfast smoothie has wormed its way into my routine somehow, and I’m okay with that.
I wouldn’t call this green breakfast smoothie particularly sweet. It gets a nice creaminess from the banana and avocado and a hint of sweetness from the fruit and orange juice, but the bitter hemp and vegetal flavor of the spirulina powder keep it grounded. I’ll be experimenting with adding some fat into the mix (coconut oil, maybe, or almond butter) to help with absorption of vitamins and minerals and to make it a tad more filling.
